Way back when, in 2000 Caitlin and Kim were in their respective apartments paying the bills as freelance publicists. They were doing fine, albeit both a little lonely, and had successfully avoided competing with one anther for two years. All of a sudden they started getting calls for the same projects, and continuously found themselves going head-to-head. Since they liked one another, were wasting lots of time writing the same proposals and were a little tired of doing everything alone, they decided to merge their businesses to form YC Media.
The first year in business was up and down and after making lots of mistakes—not negotiating a fair rent, missing a tax deadline, basically wasting thousands of dollars—they realized that they should write a book for women facing the same challenges. Over a weekend, they completed the proposal for The Girl’s Guide to Starting Your Own Business and sold it to a publisher.
And Girls Guide was born.
After the success of the first book and the follow up, The Girl’s Guide to Being a Boss without Being a Bitch, it became obvious that women are eager to connect with one another on the unique challenges that we face during our careers. Even if you have never encountered a glass ceiling, there are still issues that come up as women in the workplace. And let’s not forget that we still have that whole work/life balance thing to grapple with.
The bottom line is that Girls Guide believes that we can help one another by sharing our stories, supporting the choices we make, and by being more mentor than manager for those that work for us. That is what Girls Guide is all about.
