For Home Office this month we interviewed Linda Connolly on her new business adventure. Linda was previously the Promotion Director at SELF Magazine having come up through the ranks at TEEN, Glamour and Marie Claire. She decided two months ago to leave her job and launch her own event company, Dahlia Site Selection & Events with her business partner Mendy Brannon. We asked her about making such a big career change.
You recently made a big career change tell us about it?
After many years working in the publishing industry, my partner and I decided it was time to go out on our own, and work for ourselves. I left a full-time job (with benefits) to start my own company, which was very scary, but at the same time, felt right!
Why did you decide that you wanted to leave SELF to go on your own?
It was all timing. After being at SELF for a year and a half, we knew it was time for a change and time to take that next step. It's easy to keep working in a job that is secure and you feel comfortable in. But the hard part is the decision to leave, not knowing what is ahead of you.
What has been the biggest surprise as you have transitioned into an entrepreneur?
The biggest surprise was how busy we were in our first two weeks of business. We had been laying the groundwork for months before we officially launched. On the first day of our launch we had two clients and a big job pitch. The pieces really fell into place.
What has been the best thing about going on your own?
The best thing about being on our own is that we are building something that works for us and our lifestyle. The creativity, business sense, problem-solving skills that we have honed and developed in our past jobs are now being put into something that we own and can be personally proud of. It feels great to work hard no matter how long or tedious the hours.
What would you say to the girls that were considering launching a business?
Tell EVERYONE you know about your business... except potential competitors! You never know who could be a possible client. It's also great to have the support. Be organized, take risks and have faith in your idea.
